6 Must-Do Hikes in Alberta: A Personal Journey Through Beginner to Advanced Trails

Alberta is a top destination for hikers. With its jaw-dropping landscapes, majestic mountains, and tranquil lakes, it truly is a paradise. Over the years, I have explored many of these trails, and I’m thrilled to share six favorites that range from beginner to advanced levels. Whether you are just starting or looking for your next big challenge, there’s something here for everyone.

Grotto Canyon - Beginner

If you're looking for a hike that will make you feel like a tiny ant in a giant's playground, Grotto Canyon from Exshaw is your ticket to adventure! This hike starts off as a beginner-friendly stroll, perfect for those who prefer their outdoor escapades short and sweet.

The canyon itself is a jaw-dropping spectacle, with towering walls, making you feel wonderfully insignificant. But don't let the easy start fool you—once you venture past the canyon, the trail gets trickier, demanding more from your legs and lungs. So, lace up those hiking boots, pack your sense of humor, and get ready to be awed by nature's grandeur!

Johnston Canyon - Beginner to Medium (if heading to the ink pots)

Johnston Canyon is one of my favorite hikes, especially during the early spring. At this time, the melting snow transforms the canyon into a magical place where waterfalls flow powerfully.

The trail features a well-maintained boardwalk, making it accessible for families and casual hikers. However, do not underestimate the slick conditions; ice cleats are essential! You can rent them nearby in Banff. On our visit, we witnessed several hikers slipping without them, making our cautious and steady approach worthwhile.

About halfway through, we discovered a hidden “secret cove.” The sweet sound of rushing water led us to its enchanting beauty. The best part? The shimmering icy waterfalls and the intriguing blue water at the trail's end. This beginner hike provides a stunning introduction to Western Canada's diverse natural wonders.

Lake Agnes Tea House and Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House - Beginner to Medium

If you enjoy tea as much as I do, the hike to Lake Agnes Tea House is necessary! The panoramic views of Lake Louise, particularly at dawn, are breathtaking. I recommend starting your hike by 6 AM in the summer to avoid crowds that often swamp this popular trail.

During our early start, we arrived around 7 AM and were delighted to find a table at the Lake Agnes Tea House, located next to the turquoise waters of Lake Agnes. The trail itself is beginner-friendly, but for those craving more adventure, a detour to the Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House awaits.

This route offers a moderate challenge with its elevation gain. The views of both the lake and glaciers make every step rewarding. Together, these hikes allow you to indulge in the area's natural wonders while satisfying those tea cravings!

Taylor Lake - Medium to Advanced

In the fall, few trails captivate me like Taylor Lake, famous for its brilliant larch trees. These unique evergreen trees turn a glorious golden yellow in autumn. If you haven’t experienced this during larch season, you are in for a treat!

Although often rated hard due to its distance, an average hiker can accomplish it with determination. The peaceful forest journey refreshes the spirit, and reaching the stunning lake at the end makes it all worthwhile.

As you hike, keep your eyes open for colorful larches. When you reach Taylor Lake, the sight is breathtaking, surrounded by rugged peaks. It’s a perfect spot for a picnic or simply enjoying nature's tranquility.

Maligne Canyon in Winter - Medium to Advanced

Hiking Maligne Canyon in Jasper during winter is like stepping into a frozen wonderland, where every turn reveals a new icy masterpiece. The canyon's walls are adorned with stunning ice formations, and the frozen waterfalls create a magical atmosphere that also provide tons of fun for ice climbers. This hike is rated medium to difficult for good reason. Slippery surfaces can make even the most seasoned hikers feel like they're auditioning for a figure skating competition. The uneven terrain adds an extra layer of challenge, ice cleats are a must!

As you navigate the canyon, keep an eye out for thin ice and breakable shelf ice that can give way unexpectedly, adding a thrilling element to your journey. And let's not forget the potential rock and ice fall.. Despite these hazards, the experience of hiking Maligne Canyon in winter is nothing short of inspiring. The sheer size of the canyon walls makes you feel wonderfully small, reminding you of nature's incredible power and beauty. So, bundle up, tread carefully, and get ready to be amazed by this winter wonderland!

Lake of the Falls - Advanced

For those who seek a true adventure and don’t mind spending more than a day in the wild, the Lake of the Falls trek is extraordinary. This multi-day hike challenges even seasoned hikers but rewards them with jaw-dropping views and the beauty of untouched nature.

As you navigate the trail, expect significant elevation gain and to cross rivers multiple times. Ensure you wear proper hiking shoes, like Keens, which handle muddy conditions well and are able to get wet.

On our trip to the lake we completed the hike in one day—it is doable if you’re ready for the challenge. Upon reaching Lake of the Falls, we were welcomed by breathtaking waterfalls pouring into an alpine lake. Yes, we took the plunge! Despite the chilly water, it was an invigorating experience we won’t forget.

We also enjoyed spotting marmots sunbathing during our visit, which added a dash of joy to our adventure! Listen for their high pitched whistle.

Reflecting on Hiking Adventures

Looking back on these incredible hikes, I feel grateful for the adventure and beauty that Alberta offers. Each trail provides a unique experience with stunning views. From Johnston Canyon’s enchanting boardwalk to the rewarding challenge of Lake of the Falls, there’s truly something for everyone among these trails.

Whether you are planning a weekend getaway or a week-long exploration, pack your hiking shoes, fill your water bottles, and set out to discover these Albertan gems. I promise, you won’t regret it! Happy hiking!
